How much Auto Insurance do I need?

Consider the following three questions with the help of your agent:

1) How high should my liability coverage limits be?

It is impossible to know exactly how much damage will be done in an accident, the key is to try and think of how you would pay if the damage done was more then your policy limits.  The higher your limits of liability the less likely it is you will exceed them.

2) What should my collision and comprehensive deductibles be?

Lower deductibles will increase the premium but make it easier on you if you do turn in a claim.  Knowing your own financial situation will help in balancing the right deductible for your needs.

3) Do I need comprehensive and collision coverage?

Most cars that are financed require some type of comprehensive an collision coverage until the vehicle is paid off.

The question to ask yourself is if you can pay to have your vehicle repaired or replaced if it were damaged in an accident.

What affects the price of insurance?

Where you live

Generally, urban areas have a higher rate of accidents, theft and vandalism then those in those in more rural settings which means urban drivers typically pay more for insurance.

Age, sex and marital status

Older and/or married drivers pay less then young single drivers as a rule.

How much you drive

Typically the more you drive on a daily basis along with what your vehicle is used for will make a difference in your rate.

Driving record

Those drivers with either tickets or accidents will pay more then drivers with clean records.

Credit history

Studies have shown that credit history is a powerful predictor of future auto insurance losses. Many insurance companies consider certain credit characteristics in addition to many other factors when determining an individual's rate.

What are my coverage and deductible options?

What is a deductible?

A deductible is the part of a covered loss that you have agreed to pay out-of-pocket.

If you file a claim against your insurance, you will pay only the amount of the deductible.

When choosing a deductible, you must decide how much you would be willing and able to pay out-of-pocket, if you had to file a claim.

Higher deductibles typically mean lower premiums.

Who does my auto insurance policy cover?

An Auto Insurance policy typically covers:

·         You and your spouse

·         Relatives who live in your home

·         Other licensed drivers who have permission to drive your insured vehicle.

Types of auto insurance coverage

An Auto Insurance policy generally consists of several kinds of coverage's.

Because all 50 states have different laws when it comes to Auto Insurance, the following coverage descriptions are simply general information. They are not statements of contract.

Automobile Insurance Coverage's:

Liability

Liability coverage protects you from having to deplete your assets to pay for damages if you're held responsible for injuries or damages arising from a car accident.

Auto liability coverage falls into two categories:

1. Bodily Injury Liability - protects you if you are held responsible for injuring someone in a car accident.  This coverage helps pay for the injured party's medical expenses and lost wages. Bodily injury liability may also help pay your expenses in a related lawsuit. The amount covered is capped at the limits on your auto insurance policy.

2. Property Damage Liability - protects you if you are held responsible for damaging someone else's property in a car accident. Property damage coverage helps you reimburse another person for their damaged property (such as a car, a fence, or a home). This type of auto insurance coverage also helps pay your expenses in a related lawsuit. The amount covered by property damage liability is capped at the limit you choose when you buy your auto insurance policy.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

This coverage pays the reasonable and necessary medical expenses for covered persons for treatment due to an auto accident.

It may also pay for:

·         Rehabilitation

·         Lost earnings

·         Replacement of services (For example, child care if a parent is disabled.)

·         Funeral expenses

Medical Payments

This coverage is available in most states. It pays medical and funeral expenses for covered persons when those expenses are related to an auto accident.

Collision

This coverage helps pay for damage to a covered vehicle caused by:

·         Collision with another vehicle

·         Collision with an object

·         A vehicle rollover

A deductible is required.

Comprehensive

This coverage helps pay for loss of or damage to an insured vehicle, not caused by a collision or vehicle rollover.

Examples of this type of damage or loss include:

·         Fire

·         Wind

·         Hail

·         Flood

·         Vandalism

·         Theft

·         Hitting an animal

A deductible may apply.

Uninsured Motorist

This coverage pays for damages when a covered person is injured in an auto accident caused by a driver who does not have Liability Insurance.

In some states this coverage may also pay for property damage.

This coverage varies by state and depends upon policy provisions.

Underinsured Motorist

This coverage pays for damages when a covered person is injured in an auto accident caused by another driver who has insufficient Liability Insurance.

Application of this coverage varies by state and depends upon policy provisions.

Rental Reimbursement

Rental car reimbursement is an optional coverage that helps pay for your rental car expenses if an insured car is damaged or stolen and you need a rental car.

Emergency Road Service

This optional coverage, sometimes called towing coverage, pays a fixed amount toward the following:

  • Towing
  • Tire Changing
  • Gas, Oil and Water delivery
  • Battery Services
  • Lockout Services
