1. If I had to leave my residence, are temporary housing costs covered? YES, if you live in a level 3 evacuation zone only. You will be reimbursed for these costs, so always keep your receipts. (this includes renter’s policies, but coverage amounts may differ)
2. When should I file my claim? Due to the ongoing nature of the wildfires, most insurance carriers have requested clients wait until the situation has become less urgent to start their claim process.
3. I know my policy covers fire in my dwelling, does that also include “Wildfire”? YES, coverage applies in wildfire situations.
4. How long will the claims process take? We are advising our clients due to the sheer number of people impacted by the fires in Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho and Montana, that the process will likely take longer than normal.

Covid-19 Update 5.28.2020 – ReOpening Phases

As the re-opening phases unroll, we’d like to share some important information regarding our physical office at 101 N. Ivy Street.

First, I’d like to THANK YOU for your patience. New ways of doing business often provide both growth and challenges. I am extremely proud (and appreciative) of our top notch, professional team working hard every day making sure you get the service you deserve, even if it isn’t in person.

As of today, May 27th, our office will continue to be open via phone, web, and email. We are also going to roll out a virtual meeting option. In person appointments can be scheduled if needed. Our office will remain closed to walk in traffic. Although the option for walk in traffic is now a reality, we had already begun the process of a long awaited (and needed) building update. We had hoped to be further along in the process at the time of the county reopening but alas, COVID has delayed the construction/permitting process.

COVID-19 Client Memo

To Our Valued Clients,

As the situation locally and worldwide continues to be fluid with regards to the COVID-19 pandemic, we want to assure you, we are available to assist with your insurance needs.  However, our employees, their families and our fellow citizens’ safety continue to be our top priority. If we need to make changes to our office hours, we will communicate that information as soon as possible.

We are following the recommendations of our state and city officials.  At this time, our office will remain open.  We are, however, requesting that you refrain from personally visiting our office unless necessary.  Until further notice, phone, email and website communication is recommended.

Insurance Carrier Apps

If you have not done so already, this would be an ideal time to download and sign up for your insurance carrier’s APP.  You can perform most insurance transactions within the carrier’s APP.  These APPS are free and are a great tool.


You can drop off payments at our office through our drop box located next to the front door.  We can also take payments over the phone.  Another option is to visit your carrier’s website directly to pay your bill. Below are links to our main insurance providers.    

If your employment and income has been directly affected by COVID-19, please let us know.  Many of our insurance carriers are ready to help with billing and payment issues, including the possible movement of billing due dates.


In the event you have an insurance claim, please contact your insurance carrier directly.  Your auto insurance cards have the claim numbers on the back of your card.  In most cases, you can also begin a claim online – simply navigate to REPORT A CLAIM.  Beginning your claim by phone or website, will not delay your claim in anyway and is often the most efficient way to begin the claim process.


Many of you have questions and concerns regarding coverage if your business needs to or must close/shut down for a period of time.  We are gathering all the information we can from our carriers.  We are also waiting to see what relief the national and state governments may be providing to those impacted.  Please know we are here for you and will do our best to get the correct information into your hands.  We appreciate your patience as more information becomes available based on an ever-changing situation.

Earthquake Insurance

Recently there have been reports in the news about the imminence of the “Big One” shaking the greater Portland-Metro area, which has led many to begin thinking about what they can do to prepare for an earthquake.  In addition to storing food, water, and other supplies, it is important to think about the catastrophic damages that can take place at your home and whether or not your Homeowners Insurance will cover the damage.

Most people do not realize that a standard Homeowners, Condo, or Renters policy does not cover earthquake damage.  In fact, according to the Oregon Insurance Division, only about 20% of Oregonians have earthquake coverage.  Earthquake coverage can either be added as an extra endorsement or sold separately as a stand-alone policy.

Here are a few steps you can take to ensure you are covered:

  1. Check your current Homeowners policy to see if the Earthquake Endorsement has been added. If not, you can simply call your agent to have them add the endorsement or they can write you a stand-alone Earthquake policy.
  2. Find out what the deductible amount is. Earthquake coverage has a separate deductible from your base Homeowners Insurance.  Deductible amounts ranging from 10 – 25% will be applied in the event of a claim.   Example, if there is $200k in damages you could pay anywhere from $20k – $50k out of pocket.
  3. Identify your Coverage A (the dwelling itself), B (other structures), and C (personal property) amounts on your Homeowners policy to determine what your total deductible amount would be in the event of a total loss. Example: Coverage A = $200k, Coverage B = $20k, Coverage C = $120k for a total of $340k in coverage.  The deductible for a total loss would be 34k – 85k depending on your deductible %.


Although the deductible can be expensive, it is a relatively small amount to protect one of your biggest investments – your home.  Please contact your Oliver Insurance agent today for more information.
